A tiny cabal of right wing zealots threw quite a tantrum over Harriet Miers, forcing her to withdraw by themselves, because even she was not overtly extremist enough for them.
Even her loyal long-term membership in the "right" avidly anti-choice church, her impeccable corporate attorney credentials, and her sworn fealty to the president's agenda were not sufficient. No, they clamored for someone so dyed in the wool offensive that there would be a fight.
We will give them that fight. Some talk of a "mainstream conservative". The last time two words constituted an equally cynical lie the two words were "compassionate conservative". The truth is that the reactionary fringe who wear these mantles do NOT represent any substantial portion of the American people, let alone any mandate. The president has a current approval rating of less that 40%. He does not get to appoint ANOTHER ideological crony of his choice. And any senator who thinks he might will be swept from office themselves at the next opportunity, REGARDLESS of party.
